Magazine / Periodical First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: VG. Alfred Eisenstaedt / Noel Sickles (illustrator). First Appearance. Entire issue, September 1, 1952, in original pictorial wraps with a portrait of the author by Eisenstaedt, light general wear-only, generally clean and bright, with mailing label, text apparently had detached from wraps, but has been repaired very neatly and discretely -- almost imperceptibly -- along inside spine edge. The first appearance of the Pulitzer prize-winning story of an old Cuban fisherman and his desperate battle with a huge marlin and predatory sharks, illustrated with another color photo by Eisenstaedt, and several drawings by Sickles. Issue also includes an editorial titled, A Great American Storyteller, that introduces the popularized symbolism in the story thusly, "Perhaps the old man is Hemingway himself, the great fish is this great story and the sharks are the critics." See Hanneman C370.
