Where to Take Her

Because every man needs a plan, and some of us need that plan with pretty pictures, we present Where to Take Her: a series that answers a gentleman’s most pressing lifestyle questions and recurs whenever we get around to it.

This go-round: our picks on what to do around the city this November, from museums to comedy clubs to movies. Get out there.

Your key:

Exploratorium. Embarcadero. Frank Oppenheimer’s hands-on lab-seum for kids got a $300M reinvention this year. It doesn’t suck.

Fort Ross. Sonoma. It’s an historic Russian fortress — wait, what? —  on the coast of Sonoma, gorgeous, with plenty of parking and stuff to do. Don’t forget the wine.

Asian Art Museum. Asia’s a pretty wide swath for cultures, meaning you’ll likely find something of interest, but it’s worth the trip for the dynastic Korea collection alone.

Nick Kroll. Marina. Ruxin from The League. He’s a comedian. He hates cats. He’s playing the Palace of Fine Arts on the 19th. Get tickets.

Cynic Cave. Mission. Lost Weekend Video’s basement screening room (the Cinecave) goes comedy once or twice a week. Small names. Big laughs.

100|50|1. Smartphone photography by fifty celebrated snappers on the walls of NWBLK. Opening reception on the 8th. RSVP here.

Legion of Honor. Lincoln Park. Situated in one of SF’s most picturesque landscapes, the Palace itself is as impressive as what’s on its walls, and there’s some solid work on those walls.

Big Sur. Limited release. An appearance at Sundance. Morally ambiguous characters cut crudely from the life of Mr. Kerouac by Mr. Kerouac. Also: redwoods and coastlines. Why not?

Hunger Games: Catching Fire. What’d you think of the first one? Exactly. You saw it. And you’ll see this one. And you’ll like it more than you let on. Your secret’s safe.

Thor: The Dark World. Because Thor, and you know she’ll be dragging you to The Hunger Games in a couple of weeks, anyway. Pro-tip: Nobody looks good in 3D specs.
